ABSTRACT
The following is a report on a case involving a suspected tampering of a lawn tractor engine via the introduction of the herbicide Roundup® into the engine oil. The active ingredient in Roundup® is the mono(isopropylammonium) salt of glyphosate. The product formed during the reaction of Roundup® in engine oil was successfully reproduced in the laboratory and is characterized by FTIR. Some salts of glyphosate were prepared in this laboratory and a comparison to the product formed in the engine oil is made. The product formed in the engine oil is probably a mixture of glyphosate salts.
RÉSUMÉ
Le présent est un rapport sur un cas impliquant l'addition possible de l'herbicide Roundup® dans l'huile à moteur d'un engin de tracteur pour couper le gazon. L'ingrédient actif du Roundup® est un sel du glyphosate, soit l'ammonium isopropylique. Le produit formé par la réaction du Roundup® avec l'huile à moteur fut reproduit avec succès dans notre laboratoire et a été caractérisé par spectroscopic à l'infra-rouge. Quelques sels du glyphosate furent préparés dans notre laboratoire et une comparaison avec le produit formé dans l'huile à moteur a été faite. Le produit formé dans l'huile à moteur est probablement un mélange de sels du glyphosate.
