Evaluation of the Breathalyzer® 7410-CDN Evidential Breath Alcohol Analyzerl

ABSTRACT

The Breathalyzer® 7410-CDN with Printer was evaluated according to the CSFS Alcohol Test Committee standards (1995) for approved instruments. The Breathalyzer® 7410 is physically similar to the Alcotest® 7410 Approved Screening Device and, similarly, uses an electrochemical sensor for measuring alcohol. The Breathalyzer® 7410, however, is programmed to function as an evidential breath alcohol analyzer and is accompanied by a printer. Data from the Breathalyzer® 7410 is optically transmitted to the printer. The instrument did not respond to acetone vapours, but did respond to other alcohols such as methanol and isopropanol. The instrument showed good precision and accuracy when tested with simulated breath alcohol vapours in the range of 50 to 350 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of solution (mg%). Human subject testing (n = 11) showed an excellent correlation with an Approved Instrument (Intoxilyzer® 5000C). Blood/breath correlations with six of the subjects showed that the Breathalyzer® 7410 underestimated the corresponding blood alcohol concentration in a range of 10 to 30 miligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.

Le Breathalyzer® 7410-CDN avec imprimante a été évalué selon les Normes et procédures recommandées par le Comité des analyses d'alcool (1995) pour les alcootests. Le Breathalyzer® 7410 est semblable à l'appareil de détection approuvé Alcotest® 7410 et utilise la même pile électrochimique pour mesurer l'alcool. Cependant, le Breathalyzer® 7410 est programmé pour fonctionner comme un alcootest et utilisé avec une imprimante. Les données provénant du Breathalyzer® 7410 sont transmises à l'imprimante par l'entremise d'un lecteur optique. L'instrument est insensible à l'acétone, mais donne une lecture aux divers alcools dont l'alcool méthylique et l'alcool isopropylique. L'instrument s'est avéré précis et exact lors des analyses de vapeurs d'alcool variant de 50 à 350 mg/100 mL. Les tests effectués sur des sujets (n = 11) ont démontré une excellente corrélation avec un alcotest approuvé (Intoxilyzer® 5000C). Les corrélations sang/haleine sur six sujets ont démontré que les lectures obtenues avec le Breathalyzer® 7410 sous-évaluaient l'alcoolémie de 10 à 30 milligrammes par 100 millilitres de sang.
