Ability of Subjects with Impaired Respiratory Function to Provide a Satisfactory Breath Sample for the Alcotest® 7410 Breath Alcohol Device

ABSTRACT

One hundred and three patients, referred by their physicians for tests at a pulmonary function laboratory in a large hospital, attempted to provide an acceptable breath sample into an Alcotest® 7410 GLC roadside breath alcohol screening device after completion of their pulmonary function tests. The ability of these patients, with varying degrees of respiratory impairment, to provide an acceptable sample was correlated with their pulmonary test results. The results showed that subjects with a forced vital capacity of less than 1.25 litres (5 of 5) failed to provide an acceptable sample; one third of those with a vital capacity between 1.25 and 1.75 litres (6 of 18) also failed; and only a small number (3 of 80) of those with a vital capacity greater than 1.75 litres failed. The limiting factor in the ability to provide a satisfactory sample for the Alcotest® 7410 is the patient's vital capacity, rather than their ability to produce high respiratory pressures or flows.

RÉSUMÉ

Cent trois patients (103) référés par leur médecin à un laboratoire d'un grand centre hospitalier pour des tests de fonction pulmonaire ont tenté, à la fin de ces tests de fournir un échantillon convenable d'haleine dans un appareil de détection approuvé, l'Alcotest® 7410 GLC. La capacité de ces patients, dont les fonctions respiratoires sont affectées à divers degrés, à fournir un échantillon convenable se corrélait avec les résultats de leurs tests pulmonaires. En effet, les résultats démontrent que les sujets ayant une capacité vitale forcée de moins de 1,25 litres (5 sur 5) n'ont pu fournir un échantillon acceptable; le tiers de ceux ayant une capacité vitale entre 1,25 et 1,75 litres (6 sur 18) ont également échoué; seulement une faible proportion (3 sur 80) de ceux ayant une capacité vitale supérieure à 1,75 litres ont échoué. Le facteur limitant quant à la capacité de fournir un échantillon convenable d'haleine dans l'Alcotest® 7410 est davantage lié à la capacité vitale du patient plutôt qu'à sa capacité de fournir un débit ou une pression respiratoire élevé.
