An Investigation of the Vegetation Associated with Grave Sites in Southern Ontario

ABSTRACT

Botanical evidence may be used in forensic investigations to estimate postmortem interval (PMI) of decomposed remains, to link a suspect to a crime scene, and to track distribution of plant-based illicit substances. A recent application of botanical evidence to forensic science is for the potential identification of clandestine grave locations. The burial of pig carcasses for a decomposition study in southern Ontario provided the opportunity to investigate the botanical species associated with grave sites in this region. This study investigated the differences in vegetation structure and species composition on grave sites in an environment that was dominated by weed flora. Differences in botanical species between grave sites and undisturbed areas were identified and highlighted the potential of these species to be used as grave indicators. Further studies are recommended to investigate the effect of seasonal variation, land use type, and inter- and intra-year variations.

RÉSUMÉ

Des éléments de preuves botaniques peuvent servir aux enquêtes policières afin d'estimer l'interval post-mortem de dépouilles en décomposition dans le but de lier un suspect à une scène de crime et de pister la distribution de substances illicites provenant de plantes. Une application récente d'ÉlÉments de preuves botaniques à la science judiciaire est pour l'identification potentielle de tombes clandestines. L'enterrement de carcasses de cochons à des fins d'étude de décomposition dans le Sud de l'Ontario a donné l'opportunité d'investiguer les espèces botaniques associées à des tombes dans cette région. Cette étude a investigué les différences de structures de végétation et de composition d'espèces sur les tombes dans un environnement où les mauvaises herbes dominaient. Des différences d'espèces botaniques entre les tombes et aires intouchées ont été identifiÉes et ont mis en valeur le potentiel de ces espèces comme indicateurs de tombes. Des études approfondies sont recommandées afin d'investiguer les effets de variations saisonnières, de genres de terrains et de variations intra- et inter-annuelles.
