Forensic Biology Evidence Screening Past and Present

ABSTRACT

Although forensic laboratories worldwide have been continually investing resources in the development of new DNA profiling technologies, the technological advancements in the field of forensic body fluid identification have not experienced the same priority or enhancements. It is important for forensic scientists to use the most effective biological screening processes to ensure the best evidence is processed first in order to optimize the use of new DNA analysis technologies and provide information in a timely manner. It is surprising to learn that the majority of biological body fluid identification technologies were initially discovered in the past centuries and further enhanced many years ago. This has resulted in a body fluid identification process which often has less specificity and sensitivity compared to the subsequent DNA analysis methods in current use. Our study serves to briefly review the evolution of common forensic body fluid screening technologies and document their use in 47 laboratories worldwide. The intent of this paper is to revisit the past in an effort to improve our future use of DNA technologies for forensic science applications.

RÉSUMÉ

Bien que les laboratoires judiciaires aient continuellement investi des ressources dans le développement de nouvelles technologies de profilage génétique, le domaine de l'identification judiciaire des liquides corporels n'a pas reçu la même priorité ou les même bonifications au niveau des avancés technologiques. Les scientifiques judiciaires se doivent d'utiliser les méthodes de dépistage biologique les plus efficaces possibles pour que les meilleures pièces à conviction soient analysés en premier afin d'optimiser l'utilisation des nouvelles technologies d'analyse d'ADN et afin de fournir l'information au moment opportun. Il est surprenant d'apprendre que la majorité des technologies d'identification biologique des liquides corporels furent initialement découvertes aux siècles derniers et furent améliorées il y a de nombreuses années. Il en résulte un procédé d'identification de liquides corporels souvent moins spécifique et sensible que les méthodes d'analyses d'ADN subséquemment utilisées de nos jours. Notre étude présente un bref survol de l'évolution des technologies judiciaires de dépistage biologique des liquides corporels et documente leur utilisation dans 47 laboratoires sur la planète. Notre intention est de revisiter le passé dans le but d'améliorer líutilisation future des technologies de l'ADN à des applications judiciaires.
