An Evaluation of the Intoxilyzer® 8000C Evidential Breath Alcohol Analyzer

Abstract

The Intoxilyzer® 8000C, an evidential breath alcohol analyzer, was evaluated according to the Recommended Standards and Procedures (2003) of the Canadian Society of Forensic Science Alcohol Test Committee (ATC). The results of this testing demonstrated that the instrument met, or exceeded, the requirements of the ATC on all criteria including accuracy, linearity, precision, and acetone interference. Human subject testing allowed for the comparison of blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) determined by the Intoxilyzer® 8000C against near-simultaneous breath test results from an Intoxilyzer® 5000C, a well-established, Approved Instrument in Canada since 1992. The results of 50 paired breath samples on 10 drinking subjects were well-correlated (R2 = 0.968) and described by a linear model, y = 1.02x + 2.51. The validation of the Intoxilyzer® 8000C according to the rigid standards of the ATC Equipment Evaluation Procedure demonstrates the instrument to be an accurate and reliable means of determining breath alcohol concentrations over a range of forensically relevant BACs. Subsequent to this evaluation, the Intoxilyzer® 8000C was added to the approved list of evidential instruments on 29 August 2007.

Résumé

L'Intoxilyzer® 8000C, un instrument pour analyse d'alcool dans l'haleine, a été évalué selon les normes et procédures (2003) recommandées par la Société canadienne des sciences judiciaires—Comité des analyses d'alcool (CDAA). Les résultats de ces analyses ont démontré que l'instrument à satisfait ou dépassé les critères du CDAA sur tous les critères dont l'exactitude, la linéarité, la précision, et l'interférence par l'acétone. Les tests d'haleine de sujets humains a permis de comparer des alcoolémies déterminées par l'Intoxilyzer® 8000C contre des résultats de tests presque simultanés d'un Intoxilyzer® 5000C, un instrument bien établi et approuvé au Canada depuis 1992. Les résultats jumelés de 50 échantillons d'haleine de 10 buveurs ont été bien corrélés (R2 = 0.968) et décrits par un modèle linéaire, y = 1.02x + 2.51. La validation de l'Intoxilyzer® 8000C selon les normes rigides du procédé d'évaluation d'équipement du CDAA démontre que l'instrument est un moyen précis et fiable pour déterminer le niveau d'alcool de l'haleine sur une gamme pertinente d'alcoolémie. à la suite de cette évaluation, le 29 aoùt 2007, l'Intoxilyzer® 8000C a été ajouté à la liste homologuée d'instruments approuvés.
