A comparison of techniques in age estimation using the third molar

ABSTRACT

Identification of human remains often depends on estimating the age at death. The most reliable age estimation methods in juveniles have been based on dental development. This study evaluated the Demirjian (DGT), Nolla, and Moorrees, Fanning and Hunt (MFH) methods in estimating age in a modern population from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada using third molars as seen in 361 clinical panoramic digital radiographs of 361 individuals. Inclusion in this study required there to be at least one developing third molar clearly present in the radiograph with a known date of birth. This yielded a sample of 179 females and 182 males with an age range from 7.9 to 29.9 years. All three methods were found to be suitable in the estimation of the chronological age using the third molar. However, the Nolla method proved to be the most applicable at estimating age based on derived polynomial regression R2 values ranging from 0.854 to 0.891.

RÉSUMÉ

L'identification de restes humains dépend souvent de l'estimation de l’âge au décès. Les méthodes d'estimation les plus fiables de l’âge chez les juvéniles ont été fondées sur le développement dentaire. Cette étude a évalué les méthodes Demirjian (DGT), Nolla et Moorrees, Fanning et Hunt (MFH) pour estimer l’âge dans une population moderne de Sudbury, en Ontario, au Canada, en se fondant sur les troisièmes molaires comme le montrent les 361 radiographies cliniques numériques panoramiques de 361 individus. Pour qu'un individu soit inclus dans cette étude, il fallait qu'il y ait au moins une troisième molaire en formation clairement présente dans la radiographie et qu'une date de naissance soit connue. Cela a donné un échantillon de 179 femmes et de 182 hommes âgés de 7,9 à 29,9 ans. Les trois méthodes ont été jugées appropriées pour estimer l’âge chronologique à partir de la troisième molaire. Cependant, la méthode Nolla s'est révélée comme la plus pertinente lorsqu'il s'agit d'estimer l’âge sur la base des valeurs de régression polynomiale R2 allant de 0,854 à 0,891.
