Nuclear Behaviour in the Germinating Teliospores of the Smut Georgefischeria Riveae

Pages 223-228 | Received 21 Jan 1969, Published online: 30 Jan 2014

SUMMARY

Diploid nucleus in the teliospore migrates into the promycelium or germ tube where it undergoes meiosis. Sporidia are uninucleate or binucleate in typical germination. In atypical germination the two arms of the bifid germ tube are binucleate. Conidia are uninucleate or binucleate. Parasitic hyphae in the xylem are initially dikaryotic and becomes diploid after karyogamy. Sporogenous hyphae in the phloem as well as young and mature spores are uninucleate and diploid.
