SUMMARY
The chromosome complement and meiotic process of Harpalus affinis were studied. The following chromosome formulae were established: 2n ♀ = 36 + XX, 2n ♂ = 36+ X, therefore the meioformula MI ♂ = 18+ X. All chromosomes were metacentric; the X chromosome was medium-sized. Distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin was assessed by C-banding. Chiasmatic meiosis without diffuse diplotene was observed during spermatogenesis.
