SUMMARY
Cytological analysis reveals that all the species of Guizotia are diploids with 2n = 30 chromosomes. On this basis x= 15 is the basic chromosome number for the genus. G. abyssinica, G. scabra ssp. schimperi and G. villosa are having symmetrical karyotypes and G. scabra ssp. scabra, G. reptans and G. zavattarii showed asymmetrical karyotypes. Karyotypic heteromorphism is observed in all the species. Further, karyotypes of G. abyssinica and G. scabra ssp. schimperi are identical, based on this it has been proposed that, genomes of these two species are similar and G. abyssinica might have originated from G. scabra ssp. schimperi through selection and cultivation. Meiotic analysis of all the species suggests that translocations are involved in speciation.
