Abstract

Gentry, Joyce M. “Early Childhood Education in the People's Republic of China.” Chinese kindergartens have undergone marked changes since the Cultural Revolution. Alterations in educational policy include the termination of military training on the kindergarten level, the presentation of age-appropriate written materials instead of undiluted philosophical abstractions, and the provision of specialized training for kindergarten teachers. However, the underlying goals and values of early childhood education have remained unchanged. The children are encouraged to become ideal citizens, manifesting altruism, patriotism, self-control and uniformity.
