Ignition and Combustion of Unconfined Liquid Fuels

Abstract

Burning of unconfined fuel layers on water is an area from which techniques could be developed to remove undesirable oil spills and to study pool burning in the absence of wall effects. The principles of liquid lens formation and fuel volatility are reviewed and experiments are described where these principles are applied to liquid lens burning. A method is presented by which most petroleum-based liquids can be burned to completion on aqueous substrates.
