SHORT COMMUNICATION

Spray Combustion from an Air-Assist Nozzle

Pages 165-169 | Published online: 21 May 2007

Abstract

NO emissions from a spray flame generated by an air-assist nozzle (Appleton and Heywood, 1973) are shown consistent with a physical model previously developed for such flames with simplex, pressure-atomizing injectors (Mellor, 1973). Evidence suggests that the mixing parameter of the Fletcher and Heywood (1971)gas turbine combustor model is determined by injector characteristics (rather than mixing phenomena) for poorly atomized sprays. Liquid fuels containing bound nitrogen will exhibit an optimum pressure drop across the injector for minimum NO emission index.
