Abstract

One of the CVCC engines, of 1950 cm3 total displacement, is considered. Test results are shown on the influence of chamber geometry and operating conditions upon emissions and efficiency. A model is also reported that reproduces well the measured trends. An optimal chamber geometry is shown to exist as far as HC and NOx emissions are concerned. 11 is also shown that this engine generates a larger power output with leaner mixtures than with richer ones for the same NOx emissions an indicated specific fuel consumption. Finally, an evaluation model is considered which allows one to estimate the modifications of the engine design and operating conditions which are necessary to meet given fuel economy and emission standards.
