Abstract

The burner system and sampling techniques described in Part I were applied to the study of coal dust-air flames over a concentration range of about 150 to 250 mg/liter. Five kinds of profiles were determined through the initial bright reaction zone. These involved direct mass spectrometry and gas chromatography for gaseous species, proximate analysis and scanning electron microscopy of particulates and temperature measurements by thermocouple. Over the range of conditions studied, the microstructure varied little and a composite picture of the reaction zone is presented and discussed. Improvements on and applications of such microstructure determinations are suggested
