SHORT COMMUNICATION

Critical Energy Relation for Projectile Impact Ignition

Pages 259-261 | Received 11 Aug 1978, Published online: 27 Apr 2007

Abstract

It is shown that the general form of the Slade-Dewey equation (which empirically describes the effect of projectile diameter on the critical impact velocity necessary to initiate detonation in an explosive) can be derived using the critical energy concept of Walker and Wasley. The empirical equation is a limiting form of a more complete equation, and an unique relationship exists between its constants if the critical energy equation is to be obeyed.
