Predictions of the Concentration Field of a Turbulent Jet in a Cross-Flow

Abstract

The paper presents an application of a finite-difference scheme for solving the fluid dynamic equations of three-dimensional elliptic How to the problem of a turbulent jet discharging perpendicularly into an unconfined cross-flow. The mathematical model used is applicable to variable density flows and employs a standard two-equation, κ-ϵ model to calculate the distribution of Reynolds stresses. In order to assess the usefulness of the model for predicting the consequences associated with atmospheric venting of flammable gases at subsonic velocities, solutions of the model are compared with experimental data for methane jets obtained from wind tunnel studies by Hoehne and Luce. Over a range of cross-flow to jet velocity ratios, predictions of jet trajectory and axial concentration decay are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. In particular, close agreement between theory and experiment is obtained for the extent of the lower flammable limit contour within the jets.
