Abstract

The gas-phase, flameless oxidation of chlorobenzene (C6H5, C1) was studied experimentally in a 2·1 cm ID quartz flow-reactor operating at 1 atm pressure. Temperatures investigated were in the range 630–850°C, reaction times in the range 0·4-1·94 s, O, concentrations in the range 1·8-3·3% (fuel rich) at a fixed C6H5Cl concentration of about 0·5% in Ar carrier gas. The absolute concentrations of the reaclants and the products CO, C02, HCl, H20. CH4, C2H2, C2,H4, C2,H4 (vinylacetylene), C6H6 C10H8 (naphthalene) were determined using both gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The roles of these species, in view of our current understanding of the mechanism of oxidation of C6H5C1 are discussed.
