An Asymptotic Analysis of the Ozone Decomposition Flame

Pages 217-251 | Received 07 Mar 1991, Accepted 07 Oct 1991, Published online: 06 Apr 2007

Abstract

The ozone decomposition flame is studied by an asymptotic method that exploits the disparity of order of magnitude of a pair of Damköhler numbers instead of the largeness of activation energy. A three-step kinetic mechanism produces the experimental results of Streng and Grosse (1957)—the non-flammability of the ozone mixture below a certain strength and the flame speed response curve, the latter in good quantitative agreement, the former only qualitatively so. Other theoretical results include the establishment of an upper bound (independent of the state of the fresh mixture) for the flame temperature, a temperature locked onto despite further increase of the temperature or ozone fraction in the fresh mixture and at which the burning rate response curve resembles that of a rich fuel-oxidant mixture.
