Rapid analysis of macro and micro nutrients in leaves and vegetation by automated X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (A case study of an acid‐rain affected forest)

Abstract

A rapid and precise method for the quantitative analysis of 15 macro and micro nutrient elements in leaves and vegetation was developed using X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry, XRF. The elements chosen for this study were Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Sr and Pb. The method uses a quick and easy sample preparation procedure which avoids any lengthy or cumbersome acid digestions. The calibration procedure is established upon a number of international certified reference plant samples and offers precise and reproducible results. The method is suitable for use with fully automated, computer‐controlled XRF spectrometers, available on the n arket today. The described method was successfully used to monitor macro and micro nutrients of an acid‐rain affected forest. The results obtained in one study with sugar maple ('Acer saccharum') are discussed.
