Fertilizer requirement calculation moderated by apparent retention as deduced from two soil extracts

Pages 1047-1054 | Published online: 11 Nov 2008

Abstract

The ratio of nutrient concentrations in two soil extracts: 1) H2O, and 2) NH4OAc (0.5M) + AcOH (0.5M) + EDTA (0.02M) at pH:4.65, representative of mobile (m) and mobilizable (M) fractions are proportional to soil apparent retention R, where R = (M/m). If the purpose of fertilization is to assure an optimum mobile concentration through adjustment of the mobilizable concentration, then normalizing M and m with respect to reference field values give:

Calculations with R as deduced from two extracts reduces leachable excesses for soils with low retention and non‐mobilizable pool build‐up in cases of high retention.
