Abstract
As predicted more than 50 years ago, a lowering of dimensionality should lead to a basic change of ordering in physical objects. This paper gives a brief survey of phase transitions in two-dimensional systems and illustrates results obtained for absorbed layers on solid surfaces. Critical behaviour of two-dimensional systems is of import in obtaining optimum operating conditions for technical applications of such systems.
