Roberts’ book can also be read as a revitalisation of the Nordic and Northern European notions of Bildung (e.g. Humboldt 1767–1835) and Didaktik (e.g. Klafki 1927–2016), involving the individual’s will to put himself or herself at risk in the process of education, and in which despair and other kinds of mental struggling are similarly located within a larger horizon of meaning.
