The Role of the Physical Education Teacher

Pages 115-121 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Summary

A survey of the expectations of physical education teachers, classroom colleagues, head teachers and pupils in 13 non‐selective urban schools serving one college of education, and of students attending a specialist physical education college revealed both concurring and conflicting view‐points. The findings suggested that physical education teachers have low subject status and élitist values, and that classroom colleagues provide role reinforcement for the teacher of physical education in a situation where there are differing expectations about his role. It was also shown that students in training quickly acquire an understanding of their future teaching role.
