The Problem of Analysing Understanding

Summary

This paper consists of a summary of the research problem involved in an investigation of the meaning of ‘understanding’ in educational contexts, and of ways in which such ‘understanding’ may, in principle, be detected. It offers a statement of the initial tasks facing the SSRC research project ‘Analysing Understanding’ (1978‐79), which the author is conducting at the time of writing.
