ABSTRACT
Children whose unauthorised absence from school leads to legal action by the Local Education Authority generally live in socially disadvantaged areas, and belong to families experiencing financial hardship. Attendance following legal action frequently remains extremely poor, though there is some evidence that a planned change of school may help. Informal intervention by Education Welfare Officers may be associated with better subsequent attendance than legal action.
