Becoming Career Ambitious: the career strategies of married women who became primary headteachers in the 1960s and 1970s

Abstract

This article is the first report from my continuing research into the career and family strategies of married women teachers. This article is concerned with married women primary and infant headteachers. It considers where these women were and the amount of mobility that was involved in the construction of their careers. Then it examines when, that is the timing and the stage in the life cycle when career advancement began for these women. Finally, it considers how, that is the manner in which, for these women, progress in the career was initiated and promoted.
