Notes

1. This chant began in Chile by the people's resistance movement against the Pinochetian dictatorship of 1973. It is now a worldwide chant that signifies people's want, need, and desire for liberty and peace from institutional oppression. At all rallies and protests where Latin Americans are present, this chant is heard. The spirit of the chant is that institutional oppression (by virtue of unjust laws and racism) will ultimately fail because the people (by virtue of their unity and humanism) cannot and will not be defeated. Hope for freedom from institutional oppression (in the form of the LAPD and racism) and hope for racial unity is what we interpret to be King's message when he asked, “Can we all get along?”
