Nitrogen Fixation in Lake Sediments: Contribution to Nitrogen Budget of Lake Mendota

Abstract

Rates of acetylene reduction by lake sediments indicate 5 to 8% of the estimated annual contributions of combined nitrogen in Lake Mendota may originate from nitrogen fixation in the top 10 cm of the sediment profile. Concurrent denitrification and nitrogen fixation may account for maintenance of ammonium levels in some lake sediments.
