Abstract

A new technique for improving the efficiency of the nitrification process in the treatment of wastewater utilizes the surface sorption property of a natural zeolite, Hector Clinoptilolite. The process utilizes the zeolite as a solid-phase in an activated sludge unit. The zeolite selectively sorbs NH4 + ions from wastewater and therefore provides an ideal surface for the attachment of nitrifying bacteria which oxidize NH4 + to NO3 -. The removal of the adsorbed NH4 + from the zeolite by nitrifying bacteria allows regeneration of the zeolite surface and thus enables the same zeolite to be used repeatedly.
