The Continuous Autoflow Pedestrian Crossing

Pages 159-165 | Published online: 25 Apr 2007

Abstract

The continuous autoflow pedestrian crossing is an ergonomic design for areas where pedestrians and cars compete at a high level and where the road -width/number of available lanes would most ideally be compatible with the system, such that any narrowing of traffic (by laning to provide these crossings) is offset by their allowing the flow to be non-stop. The advantages of this system lie in the elimination of traffic hold ups caused by conventional pedestrian crossings and the facility for pedestrians to cross virtually anywhere along the length of the street instead of at specific and far distributed points, and without causing the traffic to stop.
