Fractioned Heart Rate Variability Part 1: Analysis in a Model of the Cardiovascular and Cardiorespiratory System

Pages 895-911 | Received 28 Mar 1977, Published online: 25 Apr 2007

Abstract

Measurements of heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of mental load suffer from a variety of influences. The part of HRV supposedly invariant with menial load is analysed in a control theoretical and physiological model. The main factors that influence the instantaneous heart rate are considered in the model, such as frequency and depth of respiration, blood pressure and vasomotor tone, and metabolic effects. Simulation runs, on an analogue computer show agreement of model results and experimental findings which are documented in the literature. Possible mechanisms of depression of HRV under mental load are discussed.
