Abstract
As an example of measurement by touch, fitting of plastic parts was studied. Where such requirement is dependent on judgement made by human senses, a number of characteristics must be measured in order to obtain the mechanical characteristics matching those of touch. The degree of fitting judged by touch is quantified by multidimensional scaling, using capsule-shaped plastic parts. Also, the dimensions, shapes and the degree of mechanical fitting are measured and the relationships of these to the quantified senses determined by factor analysis, multivariate data analysis being effective for this purpose.
