Use of an accident model to investigate and record causes of back injuries

Abstract

In a series of 401 cases of back pain, 122 were caused by true accidents. There were also 114 non-accidental injuries (NAI). A model used to structure the accident information is described. The model provided data on first unforeseen events and the human movements and environmental factors contributing. The first unforeseen event was a slip in 57 accidents (47%). Sixty seven per cent of the accidents and 35% of NAI did not involve handling of loads (p<0001). A study of the 57 slipping accidents is presented to illustrate the inaccuracies of current accident statistics and to explain why back injuries caused by slipping are rarely mentioned in the literature.
