Abstract
Many attempts have been made to evaluate the thermal protective properties of metallized plastic sheeting using thermometry. The results are contradictory. In the present study, the thermal insulation properties of metallized plastic sheeting and clear polyethylene sheeting, both arranged in the shape of a bag, were measured and compared quantitatively using direct calorimetry. The total heat losses were measured with subjects sitting in a whole-body human calorimeter initially without any bag covering, and then with either a metallized plastic sheeting or a clear polyethylene sheeting bag cover, leaving only the face free. The initial total heat loss ranged from 80 W to almost 300 W. Metallized plastic sheeting reduced heat loss by 43%, clear polyethylene sheeting reduced heat loss by 32%, the difference of 11% is statistically highly significant.
