Ergonomics in industrial product design∗

Pages 477-485 | Published online: 27 Mar 2007

Abstract

Whether and to what degree computer-aided work systems are being accepted by users depends increasingly on the organizational and ergonomic design of user interfaces. Up to now the main emphasis has been put on the technical functionality of products rather than on user tasks and potential user needs. The main goal has been the maximization of the functionality/cost ratio. Mistakes in design were uncovered relatively late; changes were time consuming and costly. The successful optimization of products and their user interfaces is only possible if ergonomic aspects are systematically embedded into the product life cycle. Therefore, ergonomics experts should be incorporated into the design team to solve the following main tasks:

•Analysis and description of user characteristics and system tasks;

•Design of usability concepts and user interfaces;

•Ergonomic evaluation of prototype solution variants.

Based on a schematic representation of product life cycles, this article describes human factors activities in product development. These activities are illustrated by sample solutions for major ergonomic design and evaluation tasks. Finally, a forecast is made of industrial ergonomics in the near future.
