A comparison of orientational behaviour and rotational bias in SmC*, SmCa* and SmCγ* phases of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal studied by FT-IR spectroscopy

Abstract

The structural transformations in antiferroelectric liquid crystal are investigated by the measurement of the macroscopic polarization. The experimentally found phase transition sequence in several different compounds is found to be well describable by the ANNNI model, which includes the effect of the temperature as well as the electric field on the molecular arrangements in ferrielectric phases.
