Abstract

Our linearly photopolymerized (LPP) photo-alignment technology enables to optically align liquid crystals, thus avoiding mechanical brushing. We show that hybrid photo-aligned LPP/LCP (liquid crystal polymer-) layers as thin as 12nm exhibit excellent alignment properties for ferroelectric LCD's. LPP-aligned deformed helix ferroelectric LCD's exhibit single domain alignment with contrast ratios >200:1, response times <200μs and enable full gray scale reproduction without ghost images.
