Abstract
The edge of optical absorption of MgO:LiNbO3 crystal due to ion irradiation shifts toward the shorter wavelength region with increasing Mg concentration. The introduction of Mg into LiNbO3 reduces the density of anti-site defects and changes the charge of Nb4+ Li. In the surface layer of MLN crystal which is irradiated by Ar+ ion, the weak-bound oxygen appears as a result of the activation of anti-site defects electrons and self-trapped as Nb4+ Li or small polarons.
