Abstract

ZnSe nanocrystals were prepared directly by a hydrothermal method in with Zn and Se powders were taken as the starting materials. The formation reactions of ZnSe nanocrystals is a reductive process by hydrogen in the alkaline solutions in an autoclave. The ZnSe nanoparticles were the pure cubic phase with the molar ratio of Zn : Se being close to unity. The optical absorption of ZnSe nanoparticles was measured by UV-vis spectrometer. The band edge was a steep at wavelength below 446 nm, and the energy gap was estimated 2.66 eV higher than bulk ZnSe for the quantum size effect.
