Abstract

Ceramics of (1-x)BaTiO 3 xBiScO 3 solid solution with compositions x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10 were synthesized in pure perovskite phase by a solid state reaction. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity shows that the ferroelectric T C increases with the increasing amount of BiScO 3 substitution, which was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). While three dielectric anomalies associated with the three structural phase transitions were clearly observed in pure BaTiO 3 , the two anomalies at lower temperatures were impaired by the substitutions of BiScO 3 for BaTiO 3 . The DSC measurements reveal that the two peaks associated with the lower temperature phase transitions disappear after the BiScO 3 substitution. These results demonstrate the significant effects of BiScO 3 on the structural phase transitions and dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the (1-x)BaTiO 3 xBiScO 3 solid solution.
