Abstract
We describe the potential impact of liquid crystal technology when integrated with VLSI memory to allow optical access, an approach currently under development within this laboratory. Such a technology, known as opto-RAM, may increase the data rate to and from electronic memory by at least two orders-of-magnitude when compared to an all-electronic read/write.
