The photorefractive effect in ferroelastic Sb5O7 crystals

In ferroelastic Sb5O7I the photorefractive effect was detected and investigated. Similar to ferroelectrics, also in ferroelastics an influence of illumination on the spontaneous birefringence can be noted. The mechanism of this photoferroelastic effect may be associated with the interactions of nonequilibrium electrons with a soft acoustic mode at the boundary of the Brillouin zone.
