Dielectric constant of rochelle salt in a magnetic field and vibronic theory of ferroelectricity

Abstract

According to the vibronic theory of ferroelectricity appreciable shifts of Tc should be observable under high magnetic fields. Measurements of the dielectric constant ε of a single crystal of Rochelle salt revealed no observable magnetic field induced changes—dε/dH < 0.67 × 10-4—demonstrating that vibronic effects are not important in the ferroelectric transition mechanism of pure Rochelle salt
