Abstract
A family of phase transitions is discussed theoreticall, which corresponds to tne simultaneous onset of magnetic and structural orders.In this family of magnetostructural transitions a breaking of the translational symmetry takes place for both the magnetic and structural lattices, the transitions being improper either with respect to the magnetization or regarding the non-magnetic spontaneous quantities which may result from the structural modification.Theoretical examples of such transitions are given and their essential phenomenological properties are outlined.
