The Sm-C* structure disclinations in an applied electric field

Abstract

Analytic formula for the 8π disclination in SmC structures in an applied electric field is derived in the constant tilt approximation. Qualitative conclusions for 2 π disclinations are found from it. In stronger fields domain walls should appear starting at defect lines. They separate regions of homogeneously ordered molecules in layers.
