Iron doped BaTiO3 has been studied in the region near the Curie temperature. For concentrations lower than 1.2 mol% Fe the iron dopant homogeneously substitutes Ti4+ in the BaTiO3 lattice. By annealing in pure oxygen up to 30% of the dopant is converted to Fe4+. The temperature dependent measurements show clearly that the electric field gradient at the nucleus of Fe4+ varies with temperature and is closely proportional to the square of the spontaneous polarization Ps. Thus Fe4+ seems to be a useful probe for studying a macroscopic property (fenoelectricity) by a microscopic tool (Mossbauer spectroscopy).
