Quadrupolar glasses

Pages 183-189 | Published online: 08 Feb 2011

Abstract

The theory on quadrupolar glasses (KCN)x(KBr)1−x and related systems is reviewed. The substitutional disorder produces random strain fields. The influence of these fields on statics and dynamics is emphasized. Near a ferroelastic phase transition, internal friction processes dominate the dynamic restoring forces. The resulting nonergodic instability marks the onset of the orientational glass state.
