Abstract

High-resolution electron microscopic studies of doped and proton-exchanged lithium niobates (LiNbO3: Fe, Ti, H) are described. A variety of microdomain textures were obtained depending on the energy density of the electron beam, the irradiation time, the dopant and the use of ion-beam thinning prior to electron microscopy. Proton-exchanged specimens are more stable than LiNbO3: Ti, which is in turn more stable than LiNbO3: Fe. These observations show the same order of stability observed for optical (laser)-induced damage.
