Resonances in linear electromechanical responses of SC* liquid crystal samples

Abstract

The linear electromechanical responses of four SC * liquid crystal substances were investigated. In the frequency spectra two types of resonances were found.

The first is present only in focal conic samples, and its frequency is sensitive to the mass of the freely moving bounding plate. The second is present both in focal conic and homogeneously aligned planar samples, and its frequency is independent of boundary conditions.

Based on divided electrodes measurements it is suggested that the resonances are the consequences of the zig-zag defects of chevron structures.
